i recently heard a very enlightening statement which said ' if one thinks deeply then he will find that almost all offenses are born out of arrogance'. The first thing that came to my arrogant mind was that how come I could not figure out such a simple thing. Even while I'm writing this a holier-than-thou pride is plaguing my mind. Anyways, if we observe our mind we will find that it is at peace when it is indifferent(OK, so he's doing such n such) rather than offensive(what a fool he is to have done such a thing).
To be inoffensive one has to be humbler than a blade of grass, but just saying so or trying to be so is'nt gonna help one to reach such a humble state of mind. One of the practical habits inculcated by our culture is to touch the lotus feet of our elders with love and reverence which has boiled down to stretching your hand down to the knees callously or worse-bending your back in pain.
Anyways, a friend of mine asked me once whether i know someone who i cannot offend, to which i answered no. He then said that sometimes we hit our own head and say 'ARRE !! STUPID; ARRE!! IDIOT!!' but we never get offended by our own self. Using the same logic once we start thinking others not different from our own self( or even better the supersoul within us) then we will come to the point of being inoffensive completely(real non-violence).
A blade of grass is stepped on but very humbly comes back to its former position to cushion the next step.
Refer Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's 3rd. verse of Shikshastaka which says 'trinad api sunichena' which means one has to be humbler than a blade of grass.
HARE KRISHNA!!!
